Mens 2nd XI March On
By Terry Ritchie
Saturday brought another excellent result for the seconds with a 2-0 away win at the new Bangor Grammar pitch.Local derbys are as a rule competitive and Bangor provided another stern test of North Down’s ability team spirit and determination to win.
The seconds maintained their 5 point lead in Junior 2 ( with 4 games remaining) and have now won 13 successive games.
In a very even game the seconds defence produced their best collective performance of the season.Jordan was excellent in goal and was delighted to have kept a clean sheet.Mockford adopted a more defensive role and superbly marshalled his defence. The midfield and forwards worked exceptionally hard in defence and when in possession they broke with speed and composure. They won 6 penalty corners which were well defended by a well organised Bangor defence.
Early in the game North Down realised that their normal attacking style would have to be adjusted to cope with a tricky surface and a Bangor team who were at their strongest for many weeks.McGimpsey had an excellent game and was well supported by Galway and McMillan. The counter attacking style resulted in 2 excellent goals in the 15th and 50th minutes superbly converted by Nichols. He led the front line with pace and the goals were well deserved.
The seconds produced a gritty performance of quality controlled hockey. Harlequins are the visitors next week and will again test the seconds to produce a match winning performance
