On Saturday the ladies 1st XI travelled to Armagh for a Legacy Premier League game against a fast, young Armagh team.

North Down started out strongly and optimistic and were ready to put up a good fight in attempt to get points on the board from the game. They started by winning the ball back in the first few seconds after the Armagh pass back and they started their attack. With fantastic runs from the forwards and the defence being able to work the ball between them and the midfield, North Down were playing very well and were playing a range of balls into Armagh’s circle to have lots of shots on goal. Armagh were fast paced and good at moving the ball between their players but this was no match for North Down’s teamwork and their fabulous press where they were able to pick up balls all over the pitch from Armagh and continue their attack up the pitch.

North Down got their first goal of the match halfway through the first quarter from a free on the edge of Armagh’s circle. The ball was slotted back to Alex Boyd who quickly spotted Selina Lewis making her run into space at the right post and fired the ball to her where Selina with was able to slot the ball past the keeper into the back of the net.

Armagh came out strongly straight from the whistle at the start of the second quarter and were good on the attack throwing their forwards high up the pitch to receive long balls but North Down’s defence worked hard to prevent these balls from making it into the circle and with Kathryn McGregor in goals making fabulous saves North Down were working hard to try and keep Armagh from scoring. Armagh scored their first goal in the first couple of minutes of the second quarter from a short corner.

In the third quarter Armagh went 2-1 up after scoring a reverse shot that was deflected up by another member of their team into the top of the net. Armagh were strong throughout the third quarter winning a couple of short corners, but with North Down’s strong defensive penalty corner team, Armagh were unable to score. The third quarter ended as 2-1 to Armagh.

A quick chat at the third quarter break and North Down were pumped and ready for action.  North Down won their first short corner in the final quarter of the match. During the corner the umpire played advantage when a ball hit Armagh’s foot but North Down didn’t stop fighting trying to get the ball in the goal. The whistle was blown as Armagh’s keeper lay on top of the ball and a stroke was awarded. Skipper Selina Lewis stepped up to take the stroke and easily fired the ball in the back of the net making it 2-2.
