North Down Ladies 5s Battle Hard in 4–1 Defeat

After the frustration of last week’s cancellation, the Ladies 5s were eager to get back on the pitch at Londonderry Park last night and chase another three points against South Antrim 4s.

The visitors started brightly, pressing hard down the wings and forcing the defence into action. A well-defended early penalty corner unfortunately fell kindly for South Antrim, and a deflected shot found its way into the net to give them the lead in the first quarter. Linda Marshall was kept busy with a string of superb saves, but the pressure eventually told when another cross was converted from close range, making it 2–0 before the break.

North Down regrouped well at half time and came out with real determination. Rebecca Ross and Hannah McBratney drove forward with intent, earning a penalty corner that Kathy Taylor struck well. Her first effort was blocked, but she reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and bring the girls right back into the game at 2–1.

Sadly, South Antrim’s youthful energy and pace continued to cause problems, and two more goals followed to seal the result.

Despite the 4–1 scoreline, there were plenty of positives to take. Olivia Slagter worked tirelessly in defence which earned her player of the match.

The team’s fighting spirit, especially in the second half, was clear to see and bodes well for the matches ahead.

Huge thanks to Jenna Pliagua for umpiring and to our supportive spectators.
