Leona’s late effort earns a point!
North Down ladies fifths travelled to CIYMS 4ths last Saturday hoping to improve on their 2-0 home defeat earlier in the season. In the damp conditions the girls were determined to put matters right early on and, attacking from the start, forwards and midfielders worked well to put pressure on the CI defence. However, CI came back with a vengeance raining numerous shots at keeper Linda Marshall. As the rain poured, the North Down defence’s vision must have become blurred as they let a CI goal slip in. Undeterred, the Comber girls’ forwards pressed up the left and Karen Jackson and Camy Chandler combined well for Chandler to equalise and make it 1-1 at half time.
CI tightened the screws in the second half and made countless attempts to score eventually converting a smashing shot into the corner of the net. Cara McConnell worked effortlessly to get the girls back on the attack passing the ball wide to Bethan Brittain and Leona Clifford and they had a series of penalty corners which went a begging. However all of their efforts paid off when, 5 minutes from time, Leona Clifford was on hand to score with a neat finish resulting in a 2-2 draw and a valuable share of the points.
