Comfortable win for ladies seconds

The ladies seconds hosted Pegasus thirds at Enler Park last Saturday and, as this was the second time the two teams faced each other in the league this season, expectations were for a tight contest.

Both teams came out fighting, attacking hard, chasing down every ball and working back tirelessly in support of each other but neither were able to convert. The first quarter ended 0-0.

The second quarter saw the same grit and determination with end to end hockey. North Down’s Jenna Pliauga was unlucky not to score a deflection during a flurry of attacks in the second quarter.

North Down started the third quarter strongly with some excellent link up play and with ferocity, working tirelessly off the ball for each other in an effort secure the first goal. And it wasn’t long in coming when a quick free taken by Andrea Mockford on the break found space in the attacking 25 for Jenna Pliauga who laid the ball back to Mockford , who under pressure from two defenders, slipped the ball through to Pliauga who slugged it past the keeper for 1-0.

North Down continued with the same high intensity and a well worked one-two between Andrea Mockford and Jenna Pliauga made it 2-0.

A quick break from a free hit taken swiftly by Hollie Davies caught Pegasus off guard. The ball was played long and, although it looked impossible to keep in play, determined sprinter Emily Johnston chased it right to the back line keeping it in play just outside the right post. She made an underarm pass back to an unmarked Rhiannon Davies who slotted past the Pegasus keeper to make it 3-0.

Pegasus always looked threatening on the break so it was only a matter of time before they created something – a goal against the run of play was conceded but it didn’t unnerve a relentless North Down who continued to dominate the game into the last quarter, securing several penalty corners and a further two goals from open play, one from Hollie Davies and a second for Rhiannon Davies to make the final score 5-1.

Burch Autos Player of the Match was Andrea Mockford.
