Kirk Cup Draw against Queens
North Down Draw with Queens in Kirk Cup
North Down entertained Queens in their first group game in this years Kirk Cup competition at the Leisure Centre on Wednesday evening.
In a fast flowing game both teams entertained the large crowd with end to end play.North Down probably had more of the clear cut chances but a 2-2 scoreline was a fair reflection of the play considering North down had to come from behind twice.
In the first half play was confined to midfield with few chances being created.Defences were on top but a poor pass out of the North Down defence allowed a Queens forward to run in and score with basically their first attempt on goal.North Down probed for the equalizer and were rewarded when McKeown found Jamie Orr with a great crossfield pass .He attacked the circle and scored with a strong drive from the edge of the circle.North Down won a couple of corners but Templton was of target with his efforts.
Just on half time Queens took the lead .The winger picked up the ball and was allowed to get to the circle unchallenged. His hard cross on the reverse flashed past Rodgers in goal.
The second half saw North Down in control for long spells .Their quick passing game was causing Queens problems and both Dalzell and McKeown were unlucky when their deflections to excellent crosses flew past the post with the Queens keeper struggling.Their best chance fell to Gilmore at a short corner. The initial shot was saved but reboundedto Gilmore whose effort from a narrow angle went agonizingly wide.North Down eventually got the equalizer their play deserved.A short corner switch was dispatched into the roof of the net by McKeown.
Both sides tried hard to find a winner but the defences held firm.
Both umpires played their part by allowing the game to flow at all times and this contributed to an enjoyable game played in good spirit.
