Ladies 1s Fall Short in 2–1 Defeat to Instonians

The match started quickly with outcomes in the circle for North Down after the first two minutes. Unfortunately, nothing came from these penalty corners but that did not stop Gabby Scates from continuing to burst into the circle from midfield.

The second quarter saw more chances for both teams with Megan Murray, Sophie Leckie and Caitlin Taylor linking passes with the forwards for further opportunities in the circle. The defence stepped up in this quarter with Jenna Pliauga, Caitlyn Adair, Anna Crooks and Rachael Murphy making crucial tackles stopping Instonians from creating chances to breach the circle. Kathryn McGregor also pulled out amazing saves keeping the score 0-0 at half time.

The third quarter saw a change in score when Instonians made a run round the base line for a tap in at back post making the score 1-0 to Instonians. Shortly after, they scored again making the final score of the third quarter 2-0.

Despite the previous quarter, North Down continued to push with Kirsty Boobyer creating lovely chances for Scarlett Simpson and Connie Magee in the circle. The combined effort of the team resulted in a goal when a breakdown of a long corner saw Emily Johnston strike the ball for a goal. Score now 2-1 with 5 minutes to go. The last 5 minutes was at very high intensity with the majority of the play in North Down’s attacking circle. The home team were unfortunate not to come out with a draw with the post being hit and balls just going wide.

However, this was a very strong performance for North Down’s who were unfortunate not to walk away with a win!
