North Down make confident start in Cup

Having completed their league programme last week with a 6-4 victory over Newry and a 4-1 defeat to Instonians to finish in a credible sixth position North Down are looking forward to a successful run in the newly established Sussex Regiment Cup
On Saturday they travelled to Deramore to play Harlequins in their first group game.
Play opened with both sides probing For openings but it was North Down who looked most likely to make the break through.In their first real attack the Harlequins left winger was allowed to enter the circle unchallenged and score a fine individual goal.North Down equalised midway through the half from their first short corner.The routine was slick and Templeton flicked into the corner of the net.The North Down squad was reduced to 13 players when skipper Ross Linter had to retire with a hamstring injury
The second half saw North Down on the attack as they pushed to secure the lead but it was Harlequins who got the break through.With the visitors defence caught upfield Harlequins ran through to score after an overhead pass had been quickly played out of defence.North Down pushed forward but Harlequins were always dangerous on the break.Rodgers had to be on his toes to make a couple of fine saves as the home forwards took advantage of the space behind the North Down defence
With about 15 minutes remaining North Down got the equaliser.Clarke made good ground and the ball was bouncing around in front of goal before Moore who was having a fine game slotted home.North Down continued to press and were rewarded a minute from time when Davidson made a fine run into the circle.He was pushed in the back in the process of shooting and Gilmore stepped up to flick home the winner from the penalty spot.
North Downs two remaining group games are against NICS and Mossley and one more victory should ensure a semi final place
