Ladies fifths easy win over Pegasus fourths
North Down Ladies’ 5ths travelled to Civil Service on Saturday to play against Pegasus. Due to the early starting time and school commitments many of the regular schoolgirl players were unable to make it, this resulted in an average player age of 41!! The Pegasus team were much younger, (and fitter!) so this week was very much youth against experience!
Pegasus attacked strongly and for the first ten minutes North Down looked a bit shell shocked and sleepy! However, ‘super Stevenson’ managed to take some pressure off the defence of (stalwart club treasure) Linda Marshall, Beverley Brittain, Anna D and Anna R, with an excellent shot.
Jet-lagged JR (it’s a long way from Portadown!!) started to de-stiffen and also got herself on the score sheet. Another jet-lagged player Marion Sanderson (although SHE had been in Washington celebrating a special birthday!!!!) returned to play her first league match for over a year, slightly worried before the match as to how she would play, she needn’t have worried, as it all came back to her and she fired a ball to make the score 3 nil at half time. Welcome back Marion!!! JR now has your number – BE AFRAID!!! BE VERY AFRAID!!!
Kathy Taylor in midfield suggested that maybe North Down should do some short passes to build up the play – did North Down listen to her???? Definitely not – the competition was on to see who could ‘welly’ the ball the hardest!!! Hilary West arriving in time for the second half definitely won this competition when she not only ‘wellied’ the ball into the net, but took the goalie with it!! Kerry as right mid and Ashleigh on the left wing worked tirelessly and, although Pegasus had many breaks the defence stood firm! Hils managed to get 3 goals and a fired-up JR also got another one.
Final result 7 nil, which maybe doesn’t do Pegasus justice, but the ‘Feisty Fifths’ were certainly feisty when they had any chances and hence the scoreline!
Player of the match Beverley Brittain and extra many thanks an anaesthetised Krista who probably shouldn’t have been umpiring after recent surgery but who can say no to JR??????
Report, inspired by actual events, by Beverley Brittain!
