Fourths just lose out at Cliftonville
North Down fourths travelled to CIYMS in Belfast to play Cliftonville seconds facing a tough task as, with the opponents first eleven having a free date, a number of senior players were available to strengthen their second eleven. The fourths however were well organised and started the first half well with John Clarke miss hitting what was to prove a big chance for North Down.
At half-time with the scoreline at 0-0 both sides knew a single goal would prove vital in what turned into a quite physical second half. Cliftonville’s experience ultimately told towards the end and they scored the decisive and only goal with 10 minutes remaining. The young North Down team tired heavily towards the end and could have conceded a second while the home team continued to retain the ball better particularly in central midfield. Jamie McKee lead the North Down defence well in the face of continued pressure while young Scott Irwin and Jack Bond continue to progress. Hopefully the return of injured players throughout the Club will help the fourths get a result from their next match at home to Newry thirds.
