Mens Seconds One Point From Promotion
By Terry Ritchie
After a scoreless draw the previous week against promotion rivals Belfast Harlequins seconds the seconds returned to form with a 7-1 victory over a strong South Antrim Seconds team .
The game started at a frantic pace and within 10 minutes North Down were 2 up. Colin Mockford scored the first from a short corner switch and Stevie Dalzell scored the second from a cross from the right , converting at the back post . South pulled a goal back after 17 minutes when a short corner was not cleared correctly . The Seconds controlled the remainder of the half but over complicated the game and as a result produced few chances and were disappointed with a 2-1 advantage at half time .
Changes were made at the break and the Seconds produced excellent controlled hockey during the second half . North Down completely dominated the game and scored a further 5 goals.
Peter Shields scored 2 well deserved goals , Colin Mockford got his second from a penalty stroke and Ricki McMillan completed the scoring. But for the South Antrim keeper, who was excellent throughout, the scoreline would have been doubled . Overall a satisfactory performance
from the entire squad and 3 vital points. With only 2 games to go the Seconds are 6 points clear and favourites to win Junior 2 . They are in cup action on Saturday when they take on Newry Seconds in the McClements Cup at Comber L C .
