Late Murphy Goal Not Enough as North Down Lose 2–1
On Saturday 28th February, North Down Ladies 1st XI welcomed Dungannon Ladies 1st XI to Comber.
The opening two quarters saw little to separate the sides, with much of the play concentrated between the two 25-yard lines. Both teams pressed well and showed defensive discipline, making it difficult to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.
North Down applied excellent pressure from Dungannon’s hit-outs, forcing several turnovers high up the pitch. However, the home side were unable to capitalise on these promising moments. Dungannon, dangerous on the counterattack, looked to break quickly whenever possession turned over, but North Down’s defence remained composed and organised, snuffing out any real threat.
Both teams earned penalty corners during the first half, yet solid goalkeeping at both ends ensured the deadlock remained unbroken. North Down’s midfield and forwards worked tirelessly to exploit space down the wings, stretching the Dungannon defence, but the final ball just lacked the precision needed to produce a decisive breakthrough.
At halftime, the score remained 0–0, a fair reflection of a tightly fought contest.
The second half began with North Down launching wave after wave of attack. Their relentless pressure resulted in three penalty corners in quick succession. Despite well-rehearsed routines, a disciplined Dungannon defence stood firm, denying the home side on each occasion.
The final quarter maintained the high tempo, with both teams continuing to match each other across the pitch. The breakthrough eventually came for the visitors when Dungannon were awarded a penalty corner following a controversial stick tackle inside the circle. This time, they made no mistake, clinically converting to take a 1–0 lead.
North Down’s task became more difficult when a green card reduced them to ten players. Dungannon capitalised on the numerical advantage, pressing forward and doubling their lead to 2–0 shortly after.
With time running out and determined to get something from the game, North Down pushed into an all-out offensive. Their persistence paid off when a dangerous cross from the right by Gabby Scates found Rachael Murphy at the front post, who expertly deflected the ball home to make it 2–1 with only minutes remaining.
The home side continued to pile on the pressure in the closing stages, forcing Dungannon onto the back foot. However, the visitors’ defence held strong under intense pressure, clearing their lines until the final whistle confirmed their narrow victory.
Full Time: North Down 1 – 2 Dungannon
Overall, it was a match between two evenly matched sides, both creating opportunities and defending resolutely. North Down will feel they deserved at least a point from their efforts, particularly given their dominance at key moments. Nevertheless, resilience and determination was shown right to the end – qualities that will undoubtedly be needed to see them through the final few matches of the season.
