Our Club History

North Down Hockey Club was founded in 1896 by members of North Down Cricket Club in Comber.

The Club is a founding member of the Ulster Hockey Union and has a long history of success, including winning its first trophies in 1899–1900. The Club celebrated its centenary in 1996, a year in which our 1st XI won the Intermediate League and Cup double.

Affiliation with North Down Cricket Club

North Down Hockey Club proudly shares a strong affiliation with North Down Cricket Club and is delighted to call The Green our home. This partnership not only enhances the sporting culture in North Down but also promotes collaboration between two highly regarded clubs. This collaboration stands as a testament to the commitment of both clubs to support each other’s growth and success.

Welcoming players from CI Hockey Club

In 2024, CI Men’s Hockey Club members made the decision to join North Down Hockey Club marking an exciting new chapter in the local hockey landscape, further enriching the community’s sporting fabric. This merger brings together the rich traditions of both clubs, fostering a collaborative spirit and expanding opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels. As former members of Cliftonville Hockey Club, the players from CI add a valuable legacy and experience to North Down, creating a stronger, more unified hockey presence in the area.

Hockey Ireland Clubmark

North Down Hockey Club was awarded the Hockey Ireland Bronze Clubmark in 2025.

This award signals that our Club provides a quality sporting experience, is open to all and is delivered in a safe environment, administered by an effective and efficient committee.

Where we play

Our home ground is Comber Leisure Centre (Enler) but we also play home matches at Nendrum College, Comber and Regent House School, Newtownards.
