Ladies 2s Face Elks 2s in Thrilling Qualifying Plate Clash
In a thrilling clash, North Down 2s faced off against the formidable Junior 1 side Ulster Elks, who showcased their strength and depth by bringing a squad of 18 players. Grateful that match was unaffected by the recent challenging weather conditions, both teams embraced the opportunity to just get out and play hockey.
Both teams displayed resilience throughout the game, with Elks failing to capitalise on the numerous opportunities that they created.
North Down’s defence was a highlight, with Jane Robinson making crucial tackles that thwarted the Elks’ advances.
Despite a couple of quick breakaway opportunities, the North Down forwards were left frustrated, unable to beat the agile Elks keeper.
Midfielder Hollie Davies stood out with her exceptional play, earning the title of Player of the Match for her creative contribution and effective linking of defence and attack.
North Down goalkeeper Amy Powell also had a significant impact, making several excellent saves to keep the scoreline level.
The match reached a dramatic crescendo when defender Fiona Ellis threw herself in front of the ball on the line resulting in a penalty stroke for the Elks which was controversially disallowed, leaving both teams on edge. After a scoreless draw at full time, the game proceeded to run-ins, where North Down unfortunately lost 3-0, ending a hard-fought contest.
