Victory over Ashton sets up semi final in Limerick

After the humiliating midweek defeat at the hands of Cookstown North Down got back to winning ways when they comfortably defeated Ashton 5-0 in the quarter final of the Irish Trophy

North Down were on top for most of the game and controlled the pattern of play. Keeper Coates had one of his quietest games of the season and was untroubled throughout the 70 minutes

David Shepherd gave his side the lead when he converted his sides third short corner after 10 minutes.  North Down continued to press but failed to create any clear chances.  With 10 minutes remaining until halftime the ball broke to Phil Wilson in the circle and he scored with a rasping shot from an acute angle.

The second half continued with North Down having most of the ball but Ashton defended stoutly.  Shepherd further increased his sides lead from another short corner.  Chris Speers weaved his way into the circle and unleashed a fierce shot which was deflected into the net by ace striker Mark Shannon.  North Down were in cruise control and it was no surprise when Shepherd completed his hattrick from another short corner.

Ashton were hindered in the second half when one of their players sustained a hand injury and was taken to hospital to get stitches.

North Down have a big week ahead as on Saturday they travel to Limerick for the semi-final of the Irish Trophy.  Unfortunately  North Down make the trip to Limerick without coach Gareth McKeown as he is on his stag weekend.
